To understand about my choice to be in Malaysia you can
read the article "Back to Islam" on the magazine "Islamic
Review" issue n.7-8 (1998). The activities in ABIM started in Penang where
Prof. Mohd. Talhah Idrus (Lecturer at the University of Science of Malaysia) use
to keep his Sunday class at Islamic Outreach ABIM. The lessons about Islam were
so clear and convincing that I soon became more and more attracted.
Prof. Talhah is not a fanatic and he has no prejudice
nor he teach Islam to show that is the superior religion. He knowledge of
Christian and other religions and is a modern man very open minded. This
environment cleared my doubts and was the main cause of my entrance in the
world of Islam. Soon Prof. Talhah took me, step by step, inside what it was not
only a religion, but a philosophy and a new ethnic of living.
After understanding how close Christianity and Islam are, I
felt compelled to work and help to spread moderate Islam as help in
socialproblems,human rights and environment.
I was slowly introduced in ABIM (Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia)
or Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia: a very well known and respected NGO, one
of the most prominent in Asia, led in the past by Deputy Prime Minister Answar
Ibrahim (an example for all Muslims). In his past, as student, Anwar rallied
with the people and for the people and helped to build a civil society.
I started to help in the center of ABIM, Islamic Outreach in
Penang, a nice island in north Malaysia. Few months later I met the Chairman of
Islamic Outreach ABIM and I was invited to a training week at the headquarter in
Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. There I learned more about ABIM and got to
know his leaders.
